Hardware Interfaces in Computer System

Hardware interfaces exist in many of the components such as the various buses, storage devices, other I/O devices, etc. A hardware interface is described by the mechanical, electrical, and logical signals at the interface and the protocol for connecting them.

The system unit, also known as a “tower” or “chassis” is the main part of a desktop computer. The system unit also includes the case that houses the internal components of the computer.

It contains electronic components of the computer used to process data. Some important components of a system unit are given below:

Each component inside your computer forms an important link in the making of the whole system. Out of these components, the motherboard forms the base.

It is the central or primary circuit board making up a complex electronic system, such as a modern computer.

In a desktop computer, the motherboard contains the CPU, chipset PCI bus slots, AGP slot, memory sockets, and controller circuits for the keyboard, mouse, disks, and printer.

The basic purpose of the motherboard is to provide the electrical and logical connections by which the other components of the system communicate.

It is also known as a mainboard, baseboard, system board. On Apple computers, it is called a logic board and is sometimes abbreviated as mobo.

HDMI is an all-digital audio-video interface that transmits signals in uncompressed format.

For example, compressed or uncompressed digital data from an HDMI-compliant source device to a computer monitor, video projector, digital television, etc.

It is the digital replacement for analog video and audio standards which were widely used for many decades in the past.

The production of consumer HDMI began in late 2003. Since then, several versions of HDMI have been developed and released, all come with cable and connector.

An expansion port is any connector that passes data in and out of a computer or peripheral device.

Ports are sometimes called “jack” or “connectors“. There are numerous ports at the back of every microcomputer such as serial port, parallel ports, accelerated graphics port, USB port, and fireWire port.

The term “port” refers to an external connection to a peripheral device .

Whereas “slot” refers to an internal bus connection in hardware interfaces.
  • USB and Ethernet ports, for example, are sockets on the outside of the computer case into which a cable plugs.
  • PCI Express (PCIe) slots, on the other hand, are sockets on the motherboard into which expansion cards are inserted.

Parallel ports are mostly used to connect printers to the system unit. A parallel port is a type of interface found on computers (both personal and business) for connecting peripherals.

The name itself refers to how data is sent. Parallel ports send multiple bits of data at once (parallel communication), whereas serial ports send bits one at a time.

Parallel ports require multiple data lines in their cables and ports to accomplish this.

Serial ports are used to connect a mouse, keyboard, modem, and many other devices to the system unit. The serial port on a computer is a form of a link for peripherals like mice, gaming controllers, modems, and older printers.

It’s also known as a COM port or an RS-232 port, which is the technical term for it.

Serial ports are split into two categories: DB9 and DB25. DB9 refers to a 9-pin connection, while DB25 refers to a 25-pin connection.

USB Port (Universal Serial Bus)

USB stands for Universal Serial Bus, and is a short-distance digital data transmission cable.

A USB port is a popular cable link interface for computers and other consumer electronics.

USB ports enable USB devices to be connected to one another and digital data to be transferred via USB cables. They can also provide electric power to devices that need it over the cable.

Types of USB cables are USB-A, USB-B, and USB-C.
